A Birding Haven
Birding at the RiverBend Collection is a quietly immersive experience shaped by space, stillness, and diversity. Set within a private concession of Addo Elephant National Park, the lodge offers access to multiple birding habitats without the noise, pressure, or traffic of the main park.
From riverine corridors and seasonal water to dense Albany thicket and open plains, RiverBend creates the ideal conditions for both casual birdwatchers and dedicated enthusiasts to observe birdlife as it naturally unfolds.
Why RiverBend is Exceptional for Birding
- Private concession access – no day visitors and minimal vehicle movement
- Diverse habitats in close proximity, explored without long transfers
- Year-round resident species, with seasonal migrants adding depth
- Flexible safari schedules, allowing time for birding, photography, and quiet observation
- Experienced guides with strong knowledge of local birdlife and ecology
Birding here is never rushed. Drives slow down, stops are extended, and sightings are allowed to breathe.
Birding Habitats at RiverBend
Expect sightings such as African Fish Eagle, Giant and Pied Kingfishers, African Darter, Hamerkop, African Jacana, and a variety of herons and egrets. Early mornings and late afternoons are particularly rewarding.

Look out for Blue Crane, Kori Bustard, Southern Black Korhaan, Secretarybird, and raptors such as Jackal Buzzard and Snake Eagles, often seen hunting or soaring above the plains.
Birding as Part of Your Safari
Birding naturally forms part of every safari drive at RiverBend, but guests with a particular interest are encouraged to let the team know in advance.
Guides are happy to:
- Adjust the pace and focus of drives
- Spend time tracking specific species
- Assist with bird photography
- Share deeper insight into behaviour, calls, and habitat
Birding here is not a separate activity – it is woven into the wider safari experience.
A Quieter Way to Experience Birding
Many guests are surprised by how peaceful birding can be inside Addo Elephant National Park when experienced from a private concession.
Without traffic congestion or time pressure, birds behave naturally and sightings feel unforced. It’s a slower, more intimate way to connect with the landscape – one that rewards attention to detail and a willingness to pause.
Plan Your Birding Escape
Whether you are an experienced birder or simply enjoy noticing the smaller details of the bush, RiverBend offers one of the Eastern Cape’s most rewarding birding environments.
